What we can learn about collaboration from DJ Jillionaire
What we can learn about collaboration from DJ JillionaireWhat we can learn about collaboration from DJ JillionaireYou may not associate Christopher Leacock aka DJJillionaire with being a career guru but the Trinidad-born DJ, entrepreneur and now restauranteur is full of sage career advice, especially when it comes to collaboration. As one of the members of the EDM trio Major Lazer he is constantly working as a team withDiplo and Walshy Fire on putting out hit after hit. He also started his new record label,Feel Up Records, for the purposeof highlighting new artists. And now he has ventured into yet another collaborative project with his new Williamsburg bar, Clydes Caribbean, the only Trinidadian owned cocktail bar in Williamsburg. He talked with Ladders about why he prefers to work collaboratively rather than solo and dealing with failure in your career. Two heads are better than oneLeacock told Ladders that he approaches the bar, which he works on with renowned bartender Cyllan Hicks as well asrestauranteurFallon Seymour, the same way he approaches music production.leid only is collaboration important but it is also fun. Its way better to do something with friends. Two heads are better than one. Its just easier. I much prefer to have 50% of something than 100%, he said. But a good collaboration allowsus to all grow our own individual visions. He also looks at these collaborative efforts, whether it be producing music or building a restaurant, as a platform to highlight the work of other Trinidadian artists and provide the rest of the world with context on his people and their culture. We want them to see how we get together and how we celebrate, he said.Clydes offers a menu completely ideated by Trinidadians. The beverage program is lead by Hicks and based off of vintage recipes, containing ingredients local to the country, and named after local place names, songs, and other cultural ephemera.Though he hasnt had many failures in his long career, Leacock says he de finitely has experienced some and though it serves you well to not forget it. Get yourself together and keep it moving. Try not to become too jaded.

An Opportunity to Laugh at Ridiculous Career Questions
An Opportunity to Laugh at Ridiculous Career QuestionsAn Opportunity to Laugh at Ridiculous Career QuestionsAn Opportunity to Laugh at Ridiculous Career QuestionsEvery now and then, I visit the Careers Employment section of Yahoo Answers to see what people are buzzing about. Maybe Ill find a great blog post idea when Ive got a serious case of writers block? Its worked before. Since Ive been doing that, Ive noticed that most questions are expected, like wanting to know what to ask in a job interview or how to address a year of unemployment on your resume. But my most recent search turned a little wacky and funny once I got to the third page of popular questions. What did I find? This lovely gem I accidentally called a woman hideous at work. What should I do? This made me laugh out loud in my cube, and reading the explanation of the question made me laugh even more. Here are the others I found. Theyre not for the easily offended or politically correct, and youre urged to read the colorf ul answers at your own riskWhy wont my boss accept because I was too drunk to drive as a valid excuse for missing a 9AM dept. meeting?Where does one obtain a certification as a Corn Dog Consultant? How can I nap discreetly at my desk (it seems I had a big night - cant remember) without getting caught?Whats the best way to go about making sure imaginary procedures that no one follows are well-documented?Is it really all that schwimmbad to list a company youve never worked for on your resume? How do I account for the 2 years I spent as a day time hooker on my resume?Snickers. Where You Attend Law School Does Matter for Some Jobs
Where You Attend Law School Does Matter for Some JobsWhere You Attend Law School Does Matter for Some JobsAs the time for law school seat deposits rapidly approaches, many potential law students are wondering the same thing How much does it matter which law school you attend? The answer, if were talking about legal careers, is A lot. Deciding which law school to attend is probably the single biggest decision you make for your legal career. Law Is a Snobby Profession Lawyers are a snobby bunch. They care about precedent, and they care about hierarchy. Attending a prestigious law school can open many doors, which will otherwise remain closed. That being said, of course, there are many successful attorneys who didnt attend fancy law schools. In fact, some have suggested that graduates of less prestigious schools are actually more successful in law firms. Its definitely possible to be a happy, successful attorney if you go to a less prestigious school. But, there are certain jobs (la w professor, Supreme Court clerk, etc.) youll be hard-pressed to get if you make that choice. drehort Matters For most potential students, the single most important consideration in which law school to go to should be location. (This advice assumes you dont have the option of one of the few truly national schools at the top of the prestige heap.) If you know where you want to practice, aim to go to law school in that area. There are several reasons for this. One, it gives you an opportunity to participate in the legal community for three years. Youll have opportunities for networking, internships, and so on that simply wont be possible if youre not geographically located where you want to practice. Two, it shows youre serious about the location. Especially in highly desirable areas (or highly insular ones), studying where you want to work shows that youre committed to the area. No one wants to hire someone whos just going to move in a couple of years, so sending the signal that youre here to stay is valuable. Three, you can interview on a moments notice. When a desirable job opportunity comes up, far better to be ready to go If you have to fly across the country for an interview, versus just popping across town, your options are far more open. Finally, it might help you pass the bar exam Particularly for states with notoriously difficult bar exams (California, were looking at you), attending a local school can expose you to more of the law youll be tested on, making it easier to pass on the first try. Your School Is Your Network The people you meet in law school, whether its professors, classmates, or alumni, are your professional network when you graduate. Of course, its possible to overcome the lack of a network where you want to practice and meet lawyers in the local area, but its far easier to keep in touch with law school friends and cultivate those connections over time When deciding between different schools, ask about the strength of the alumni network. (And, even better, test it out by asking to speak with some recent graduates to see if theyll talk with potential students.) A strong alumni network will pay dividends far into the future, so its something to look for upfront. Consider the Opportunities Each School Offers Whether youre pretty sure you want to work in a certain area of the law, if youre keeping your options open, look at the opportunities each school offers to explore your career interests. Are there clinics and externships available to develop your practice skills? How competitive are these opportunities? Does the school offer a loan repayment plan for public interest work? If you have any interest in this option, investigate it thoroughly. How about jobs? What do the schools job numbers look like? Can you trust them? Try talking to recent graduates, to get the real scoop on jobs and other opportunities, rather than just relying on glossy brochures from the schools

The space industry is coming to your town. What does it mean and how to get ready
The space industry is coming to your town. What does it mean and how to get readyThe space industry is coming to your town. What does it mean and how to get readyWere on the brink of something huge. With the space industry exploding in the US and around the globe, maybe its about time we started thinking about the ways to join in.The truth is, sooner or later, the space industry will come to your country, maybe even your town. And when that happens, are you going to make the best of it?But dont jump on the bandwagon just yet. Heres a quick overview of what you can expect in the upcoming years. It might help you make a well-informed (rather than rash) decision. But wait, what is the space industry?First, lets clear some terms here. As you probably suspect, the space industry isnt just about boldly going where no one has gone before or shooting Tesla Roadsters to Mars. No, it starts much closer to home. About 100km from where youre standing right now.Ever heard of the Karman line? Thats what experts call the boundary between Earths atmosphere and outer space. For all legal and regulatory purposes, its 100 km above the sea level.Unsurprisingly, people tend to believe the space industry happens above the Karman line. Probably thats why it seems so unreachable to many of us.But at the end of the day, those satellites wont build themselves. Neither will the rockets that take them into space. But wait, somebody has to make components for all of those too? And what about the launch and landing sites? Then you have transportationAll of these (and many others) engage in activities that make up the space economy. But then you also have upstream and downstream space economy and things get a bit confusing again. WellThe upstream economy involves everything going from Earth to space. That includes designing, manufacturing, servicing, launching, operating, and innovations related to everything that enables space exploration. The easiest way to understand the downstream economy is to picture the flow of data and materials coming from space down to Earth. All satellite communication, GPS, broadcasting services, pictures, or any data you use in your everyday life. Not just a government thing anymoreYou know the story. Some years ago, a certain South African entrepreneur asked how much for a rocket. About $65 million, they said. The price seemed astronomical, to say the least.Instead of quitting right there, he did some research. He discovered the components for a spaceship only make up for about two percent of the final price. He decided to build the rocket himself.Whats more, it would cost only a fraction of what other aerospace manufacturers charged. The entrepreneur? Elon Musk. The company? SpaceX.And the rest is history.SpaceX is elend the first and definitely bedrngnis the only private aerospace industry project in history. But it is the one that marked a new era for space commercialization. And its also the only one your parents ever heard about. For five years, SpaceX worked on Falcon 9, a rocket that would deliver cargo to ISS. Costs? Something under 400M USD. Based on a NASA study, the in-house cost of a similar rocket would be 1.4B USD.NASA and other national or international agencies spend billions of dollars on similar activities every year. But still, more than 75% of space activity in 2016 welches private.Eighteen successful launches by a private company marked 2017 as a historical moment in the commercialization of space. (SpaceX broke its own record in 2018 with 20 successful launches.)Along came billionaires and startupsIn 2017, 16 of the worlds richest people either already had a space company of their own or invested in one.Apart from the three best-known ones, Elon Musk (SpaceX), Richard Branson (Virgin Galactic), and Jeff Bezos (Blue Origin), the list also includes Bill Gates (Kymeta), Mark Zuckerberg (SETI), Larry Page (Planetary Resources), Paul Allen (Stratolaunch), Yuri Milner (Planet), and others.Besides, hundred s of space startups, if not thousands, have been founded over the past years. Whats more, the amount of money investors are pouring into them could easily make anybodys head spin.Just to give you an idea of what numbers are. Since 2000, more than $16 billion has been invested in space startups, two thirds of that in the past five years. In November 2019, Director of the Office of Space Commerce at the Department of Commerce, Kevin OConnell, said that during his time there, he met about 50 people ready to invest more than $2T of private money in the space sector.Thats 2,000,000,000,000 dollars. Can you see how big this is getting? The future is already hereSeveral things enabled Space 2.0, as experts call the new era of space exploration. This new era is defined by cost reduction, new approaches and possibilities, and small private companies. First, the five-ton satellites of the past were miniaturized to a pico-/nanoscale. Their weight? Anywhere from 0.1 kg to 10 kg. Sure, you could s till find a few really big ones but who would pay for them when there are satellites you could easily fit in your pocket.Second, the age of internet, innovation and general evolution of technology. Its almost impossible to avoid all the buzzwords tech people use nowadays. But behind each of these buzzwords theres always a very real technology like AI, IoT, cloud computing or blockchain.belastung but not least, the teams needed for research became smaller thanks to the philosophy of everything that I can do myself, I will do which led to foundations of small, private companies penetrating the market. And Space 3.0 with its man-on-Mars KPIs is just around the corner. Why should you care? You dont have to, really. But this is going to be huge, whether you care or not. Like, trillion-dollar huge. Does that really trigger no fear of missing out?Let me put it this way. Did you ever wish you invested in an internet business like Amazon or Google back in the 1990s? Well, heres your chance. Th is time its in space.Still a non-believer? Lets talk numbers then.In 2017, the space economy welches valued at about 350B dollars. In 2016, it was 329B dollars, which grew from 323B in 2015. This only loosely foreshadows whats coming next.Doesnt matter which predictions you look at, it all goes (almost) to infinity and beyond.Bank of America Merrill Lynch report on the future of space (great reading for more geeky tips check out the bonus part at the bottom) estimates the space economy will grow almost tenfold in the next decades. By 2045, it should reach $2.7 trillion.Investing In Space by Morgan Stanley puts forward a slightly more pessimistic number of at least $1.1 trillion by 2040.Still, compared to the previous six decades of the industrys existence (NASA was founded in 1958), that represents an astonishingly high growth in such a short time. Its not just the numbersLets consider factors other than numbers now. Call them qualitative, if you like.Everyones beginning to take the space industry seriously. Its inevitable for the future of mankind. The mere fact that the US president ordered the Pentagon to form the sixth branch of the military, so-called Space Forces, could tell you something about where were headed.Space exploration could also present a solution to some of the worlds existential roblems like overpopulation, environmental degradation, or even potential cataclysmic collisions with comets or asteroids.Thats why Elon Musk talks about going to Mars in 2025, Japan wants to extract resources from the Ryugu asteroid, and National Space Society pushes for orbital settlements in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).You get the picture. Its really not a question of if, but when.Engineers only? Some experts believe the job market isnt ready for a trillion dollar space industry. Americas space industry seems to have a hiring problem even today.Right now, the American space industry employs around 200k people. And if that seems like a lot, you should know the number is dw indling every year. You could think its mostly engineers and technical personnel such as Space Instrument Systems Engineer, Space Software Engineer, Aerospace Engineer, or Mechanical Engineer. But it doesnt end there. The space economy will also need skilled accountants and lawyers. For instance, the Outer Space Treaty desperately needs an update at this point, being more than 50 years old.As new markets are emerging and businesses need to cash returns on their investments, business developers and analysts will also play a crucial role in the upcoming years. The same applies to data specialists, as the amount of data transferred to Earth today is nothing compared to whats coming next.Sustainable rocket launches? Youll need chemists for that. Measuring the impact of space on the human body? All kinds of medical professionals wanted. The list goes on. But then you have professions that dont even exist yet.According to Wired, you can make a living as LEO pilot calming down nervous first-ti me passengers. Are you a psychologist? First travellers to Mars will find your support indispensable.A linguist? Youve seen how that played out in Arrival, so be ready. The plot of Gravity doesnt strike far from the mark either. Somebody has to take care of more than 670,000 pieces of space debris larger than 1 cm in Earth orbit. The first pioneers, such as Japanese Astroscale, are already testing the waters. Not sure what job to pick?Only time will tell which jobs are going to be in high demand, though. But if you want to make a safe bet, focus on the most relevant industries.Which industries will become space industry leaders according to the World Economic forum?Energy industryThe energy industry is already the biggest industry on Earth. Over $8.4 trillion valuation and a 4.1% growth rate say it plainly living on a planet or anywhere else, were always going to need more energy to power our engines and tools. Mining industry Asteroid mining is likely to trigger something like the next gold rush. At least thats what experts from Luxembourgs Space Resources Initiative believe. Still, keep in mind it was the companies producing shovels and jeans that profited most from the California Dream era.TransportationCompanies like SpaceX or Virgin Galactic deal first and foremost in transportation. But even if you feel like you dont have what it takes to score a job at SpaceX (or if youre not American), getting any job in the aerospace or automotive industries might be a good place to start. The synergies between the two are deep and undeniable.Best advice? Stay curiousIf humans dont fall victim to their worst tendencies anytime soon (such as bombing each other into oblivion or eradicating rainforests), theres a pretty good chance well get to see the marvels of the new space era.The aim of this short article was to give you a brief introduction to the vastness of the space economy and give you tips on where to focus your attention. But at the end of the day, the bes t thing you can do is to remain open to change, stay excited about what comes next and prepare for the new opportunities, jobs including.Never stop learning new things. 4 Important Things to Consider When Hiring for Your Startup - Spark Hire
4 Important Things to Consider When Hiring for Your Startup - Spark HireWhen it is time to hire for your small business, it can be easy to get caught up in the sense of urgency and forget the important things we must consider when adding a new employee. By stopping, planning, and determining what your business needs and what you are looking for, you will find it much simpler to make the best hire for your startup.1. PositionIf you are adding a new position to your business, you must first determine the specifics of the position. Is this a management position or an administrative position? Decide what the position is based on your companys needs. Developing a clear and concise job description will help you in advertising your available position to the appropriate candidates and will provide you with a guide throughout the consideration process.2. SkillsWhen you are developing your job description, think about the skills that someone would need in order to properly perform the job func tions. Will you need someone with 15 years of experience in finance or sales, or will someone who has 1-2 years of experience be able to do the job? This is the time to think about how much training you will be able to provide to the new hire. If you are able and willing to spend weeks and months training the hire, perhaps you should opt for more of an entry level candidate. If you prefer to only train for a short amount of time, getting the new hire up to speed on your company and then expecting them to know what needs to be done based on specific experience, you should probably opt for a more experienced veteran.3. CompensationDepending on the position responsibilities and skill set required, your compensation will vary. Being a small business, it may be wiser to consider candidates with a few years of experience rather than candidates with many years of experience under their belt. The reason for this is because the more experienced the candidate, the higher the compensation. When you are growing your small business, you typically have budgets you must stick to. Decide on the most cost effective method for your business and adjust compensation plans accordingly.4. Cultural FitYou started your small business because you have a passion for what you do. It is only natural that you will want to hire people who also have this passion. When you are interviewing, it is key to interview for cultural fit in order to make a successful hire. Be aya to find out as much as possible about each candidate you are considering their past work experiences, environments they have worked in, what gets them going each day, etc. Also, make sure that you are sharing your vision and dream with the candidate. Express your desires when it comes to your business and the type of company culture you want to see. When you are making your initial new hires, you are hiring the leaders of your company. These are people that you will mold and train, in preparation for them to be with your com pany and help to grow the dream. What are some things that you have considered when hiring for your startup? Please share your thoughts and recommendations below.Image

5 Networking Tips for Generation Z
5 Networking Tips for Generation Z5 Networking Tips for Generation ZPinMove over millennials, generation Z is the new kid in town. Generally thought of as the generation born from the mid-90s through the mid-2000s, generation Z is now entering the workforce. This generation is technologically savvy and likely grew up with social media. What can those in generation Z expect as they begin to enter the workforce and need to network to foster connections? Below were going over five networking tips for generation Z that can aid in using the skills they already have, while changing and adapting to a workforce of all ages. Here are five networking tips for generation Z1. Get out from behind the screen. As generation Z, youve probably grown up with a device in your hand from a young age. Technology comes naturally to your generation, and its likely a part of your everyday life. Despite this, its important to get out from behind the screen and do some in-person networking. While its not everyones favorite, meet ups and in-person networking events abound. You can connect with others online, but be sure to eventually suggest meeting up for coffee to plattl their brain or share ideas.2. Use social media responsibly. While emails, texting, and social media are probably second nature to you, be sure to not overly rely on them or overuse them. Not everyone will respond to emails or messages in as timely a manner as youd like. Firing off too many messages can come across as overbearing, and likely wont win you any points with any potential networking connections. On a similar note, pay attention to the amount you post on any professional social media accounts you create. Sharing consistent and occasional updates on LinkedIn or Twitter is a smart idea. Sharing random tidbits of your life multiple times per day is best saved for your personal accounts.3. Adapt to older processes. While you may prefer to have everything digital, such as your business card, your work samples, and your re sume, its wise to consider other options. People of other generations may prefer and expect you to hand them a paper business card or resume.Consider the industry youre wanting to enter and the manner in which youre networking. Are you attending a networking mixer with industry insiders? Its probably best to print up some business cards. Are you meeting for lunch with an entry-level employee at a company youre interested in working for? An emailed resume or a link to your website is probably sufficient.4. Meet one-on-one or in smaller groups.Large networking events can be difficult and intimidating for people of all ages. And thankfully theyre not the only networking options. Try seeking out individuals or small group meetings to lessen the intimidation factor. Networking doesnt have to be super formal.Try out LinkedIn Groups, or get active in Twitter discussions. You may be able to naturally strike up conversations that can lead to a one-on-one get-together or a recommendation for a future job.5. Connect with people and companies that are meaningful to you.As a member of generation Z, its likely that you really care about the mission and values of a company that you want to work for. Environmental responsibility, passion for the company product, and a flexible work environment tend to be important issues to younger generations. As youre job searching and networking, seek out connections with those who believe the same things you do about work.In an effort to get a job, any job, you may be tempted to align yourself with people and companies that dont fit your needs. Instead, research companies and follow and interact with them on social media to get a feel for their core beliefs and how they treat employees. Spend your time networking with people and companies that excite you and youll have increased success at finding a great first job.Know someone looking for a job? The Lazy Way to Get Ahead at Work
The Lazy Way to Get Ahead at WorkThe Lazy Way to Get Ahead at WorkWhen I welches early on in my career, just a baby consultant (before I broke free and became a career coach), I used to wonder a lot of things. Namely, how people got ahead. Or, to put it another way How did that kind-of-douchey guy get promoted so quickly? And, why did that other girl seem to get jobs so easily? Also, how was that senior manager on the fast track? He was so youngIt took me a while to realize that they had one big thing in common They had support. The douchey guy had a powerful uncle who was willing to open doors. The other girl seemed to have an amazing network of peers who kept her in the know about job openings. The senior manager on the fast track seemed to have a regular hang-out with the leadership team. And then there was me. Tall, a little awkward, and sometimes too direct. Sure, I was good at my job, but I also felt like I was getting left behind.Through too much directness, I had also made a not- friend of my company-assigned mentor (i.e., the person who was in dienstgrad of promoting me). I also hadnt spent much time getting to know my leadership team. You can guess that the first promotion I wanted didnt come as quickly as I had hoped for. Now, dont get me wrong The first step to getting ahead is to do great work and be known as someone people can count on. But step two is something that many people forget putting together a career support team. After all, if no one knows about how great your work is, or how great you are, then all the great work in the world wont help you move up the ladder or hand you that amazing opportunity youve been waiting for. So, how do you build that team? Here are three steps to consider at any job- ideally sooner, rather than later.Step 1 Focus on Your PeersSpend some time getting to know people at your level across the company. For one, it makes the workday a whole lot mora fun when you know your co-workers. But in addition, people move on all the time, and when they do, they can be a wonderful way for you to peek into a new company. Working side-by-side with someone is an obvious way to do that, but so is hanging out at company happy hour, inviting people to lunch or coffee, and just having a conversation at the coffee machine that isnt about work. (Yep, you want to build relationships, not just work contacts.) And as people do change projects, leave the company, or move on in general, maintain your connection with them. Keep in touch though social media and also through conversation- in person. Its amazing what one dinner or lunch can do to land you a new (and fabulous) job. Step 2 Seek Out a MentorMentoring has gotten to be a pretty formal term these days, but I think we are taking it too seriously. The truth is that you can be mentored by anyone you trust- a senior family member, an old boss, a leader in your company, or even a former peer who has moved up. It doesnt have to be a formal relationship, either, just som eone who you can bounce ideas off of and who has some wisdom or guidance to offer when you need some insight. Wondering if you should change jobs? Looking for a certain connection at a new company? Trying to get a meeting with a higher-up? Pick two or three people you know who you think have great advice for you or insight into something you are wondering about, and start informally chatting with them. Maybe its an office drive-by, a quick coffee, or a 20-minute phone call. Whatever makes sense for them (and you). Most people like to feel wise and valued, and if you are mindful of their time and appreciative of what they have to offer, it will pay dividends for you in the future. If you cant identify anyone who might fill this role, ask others who their mentors are, and see if that spurs ideas. You can also give it time and see who comes your way. Its the approved kind of stalkingStep 3 Get a SponsorSponsors are different than mentors- they are people in your current organization who are actively trying to help you move up the ladder. They help you because they like you and because your moving up helps them- you have a talent, skill, or ability that benefits them, so they are willing to go to bat for you. Finding someone who can be a true sponsor and winning them over takes time and work, but its well worth the effort. Id start with your manager or someone else whos one level above you. Ask to schedule time on this persons calendar to pick his or her brain about your career and plans for growth, asking for feedback, input, and advice. After that, go out of your way to be incredibly useful to this person, both in your current responsibilities and by taking on new ones, speaking up in meetings, and generally being a go-to employee. Finally, stay connected through informal hallway chats, office drive-bys, and scheduled check-ins, so youre always on your sponsors radar. And for me? Well, I asked for and got a new company mentor who really turned out to be a sponsor in disguise, and I spent as much time as possible being helpful to her, getting to know my leadership team, and being amazing at my job. When promotion time came back around, I had an army of advocates who helped me get that next great position, and then the one after that. Three quick promotions later, I could look back and trace some of my success directly to my career support team. Bottom line Work hard, but make sure you have the right community surrounding you. Theres no end to what you can do.Feeling stuck and like you need an amazing community to help you find a career you love? Wishing that community was fun and also enjoyed wine?
